Quick answers
- How much oil does a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke take?
- 5.0 liters or 5 U.S. quarts; Fill between the add mark and the full mark on the dipstick; do not overfill.
- What engine oil does a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke use?
- 4-Cycle Marine Oil, SAE 10W-30 for all temperatures; SAE 25W-40 may be used above 4 °C (40 °F). If not available, a premium 4-cycle engine oil certified API SH, SG, SF, CF-4, CE, CD or CDII.
- What gear oil does a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke use, and how much?
- Mercury Precision Parts / Quicksilver Premium Gear Lubricant. Quantity: 710 ml (24 fl oz), both the 2.07:1 and the 2.33:1 gear housing. Fill through the fill/drain hole until it appears at the front vent hole, install that plug, then continue until it appears at the rear vent hole.
- What spark plug does a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke use?
- NGK LFR5A-11, qty 4. Gap: 1.1 mm (0.043 in).
- How often should a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke be serviced?
- The factory schedule lists: Every 100 hours or once a year; Every 300 hours or 3 years; Every 400 hours or 4 years. In Hawaiʻi's salt water we do a full yearly service every 200 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first, and a new engine needs its first (break-in) service.
- When should the water pump impeller be replaced on a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke?
- The factory schedule says to replace it at 300 hours. In Hawaiʻi's warm salt water we replace it every 200 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first, because a worn impeller is the most common cause of overheating.
- What is the idle speed of a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke?
- 850 ± 25 rpm in neutral, warm engine; 775 to 800 rpm in forward gear, warm engine.
- What is the propeller nut torque on a Mercury 75 / 90 FourStroke?
- 75 N·m (55 lb-ft); bend three of the tab washer tabs into the thrust hub grooves.
