Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp (90° V6, 3.3 L and 3.4 L) service guide
Oil, gear oil, spark plugs and the service schedule for the Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp (90° V6, 3.3 L and 3.4 L) (200 to 300 hp, two-stroke), from the factory service manual, plus how we service it in Hawaiʻi.
Quick answers
- What two-stroke oil does an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp use?
- Evinrude/Johnson XD100 (highly recommended for all conditions), XD50 or XD30; if these are not available, a TC-W3 certified oil. Below 32 °F (0 °C) use XD100. Oil ratio is EMM controlled: the TC-W3 setting is standard for all oils; the XD100 setting is a reduced oil rate that REQUIRES XD100 and is not available on all models. Set with Evinrude Diagnostics.
- What gear oil does an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp use, and how much?
- HPF XR Gearcase Lubricant. No automotive gear lube or engine oil. Quantity: M2 counter rotation 35.8 fl oz (1060 ml); L2 type 32.5 fl oz (960 ml). M2 counter rotation 41 fl oz (1220 ml); L2 33.1 fl oz (980 ml). Fill slowly from the drain/fill hole until lube appears at the level hole.
- What spark plug does an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp use?
- Champion QC8WEP, qty 6. Refer to the Emission Control Information label. Check the emission label before using. Gap: 0.028 ± 0.003 in.
- How often should an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp be serviced?
- The factory schedule lists: Every 300 hours or every three years. In Hawaiʻi's salt water we do a full yearly service every 200 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first, and a new engine needs its first (break-in) service.
- When should the water pump impeller be replaced on an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp?
- The factory schedule says to inspect it at 300 hours. In Hawaiʻi's warm salt water we replace it every 200 hours or 1 year, whichever comes first, because a worn impeller is the most common cause of overheating.
- What is the idle speed of an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp?
- 500 ± 50 r/min, all models. RPM limit 6050.
- What is the propeller nut torque on an Evinrude E-TEC 200 to 300 hp?
- With keeper 70 to 80 ft·lb (95 to 109 N·m); without keeper 120 to 144 in·lb (13.6 to 16.3 N·m). If the cotter pin holes do not line up, tighten further; never loosen. New cotter pin. Triple-Guard grease on the whole prop shaft.

| Fuel and oil filters | Water-sensing, water-separating fuel filter, replace every 300 hours or 3 years. Two serviceable oil filters: one in the oil injection tank and one in the oil supply line before the oil lift pump, replace every 300 hours or 3 years. |
| Gearcase lubricant | HPF XR Gearcase Lubricant. No automotive gear lube or engine oil. |
| Gearcase capacity | M2 counter rotation 35.8 fl oz (1060 ml); L2 type 32.5 fl oz (960 ml). M2 counter rotation 41 fl oz (1220 ml); L2 33.1 fl oz (980 ml). Fill slowly from the drain/fill hole until lube appears at the level hole. |
| Gearcase level and drain/fill plugs | 60 to 84 in·lb (7 to 9.5 N·m), new seals. Install the level plug first, then the drain/fill plug. |
| Gearcase leak test (lube drained) | Pressure 3 to 6 psi (21 to 42 kPa); if no leak, raise to 16 to 18 psi (110 to 124 kPa). Vacuum: apply 3 to 5 in Hg (76 to 127 mm) with the pump; the gearcase must hold a minimum of 15 in Hg (381 mm). |
| Spark plug | Champion QC8WEP, qty 6. Refer to the Emission Control Information label. Check the emission label before using. |
| Spark plug gap | 0.028 ± 0.003 in. |
| Spark plug torque (indexed) | 15 ft·lb (20 N·m), Triple-Guard grease on the gasket. Index the open side of the ground electrode toward the injector: if not in the unshaded area, you may go up to 30 ft·lb (41 N·m) and no more; if it still will not index, try another plug. |
| Idle speed in gear (EMM controlled) | 500 ± 50 r/min, all models. RPM limit 6050. |
| Thermostats | Two thermostats (one in each cylinder head), open at 143 °F (62 °C). Maximum temperature 190 °F (88 °C). |
| Water pressure | Spec tables: 200 / 225 / 250 (3.3 L) 20 psi minimum at 5000 r/min (2010: 11); 250 H.O. / 300 (3.4 L) 11 psi minimum at 5000 r/min (2010: 13; 2008: 11). 3.4 L idle 4-6 psi, 5000 r/min 18-25 psi, 5500 20-30 psi (2010: 77). |
| Anodes | Three anodes: stern bracket, propeller shaft bearing housing (inside the gearcase) and gearcase housing. Replace when eroded to two-thirds of original size; do not paint. Bearing housing anode screws 108 to 132 in·lb (12 to 15 N·m). |
| Propeller nut | With keeper 70 to 80 ft·lb (95 to 109 N·m); without keeper 120 to 144 in·lb (13.6 to 16.3 N·m). If the cotter pin holes do not line up, tighten further; never loosen. New cotter pin. Triple-Guard grease on the whole prop shaft. |
| Power trim and tilt (three ram) | Power Trim/Tilt & Power Steering Fluid or GM Dexron II ATF, level to the bottom of the fill plug threads. Capacity 21 fl oz. Fill cap 45 to 55 in·lb (5 to 6 N·m). Check every 3 years or 300 hours; cycle fully 5 times to purge air. |

Every 300 hours or every three years
Replace: fuel filter, oil filter, gear case oil, gear case plug gaskets, propeller cotter pin, water pump impeller
Check: spark plugs, anodes
We replace the water pump impeller at every service from 200 hours up, which can be sooner than the factory schedule, because of Hawaiʻi’s warm salt water.
