Why Does My Outboard Lose Power?
Bogging, not reaching full RPM, or cutting out.

An engine that bogs down, will not reach full RPM, or surges and cuts out is telling you something. The cause is usually fuel, a protection mode, ignition, or the propeller.
Fuel problems
- Clogged fuel filter or water separator. The most common cause, and cheap to fix.
- Soft primer bulb or air leak. If the bulb collapses at speed, fuel is being starved.
- Stuck anti-siphon valve at the tank, or a pinched fuel line.
- Bad or old fuel. Ethanol fuel picks up moisture and separates.
- Dirty injectors or carburetor jets after the engine sits. We clean them ultrasonically and flow test injectors.
Engine protection mode
Modern outboards limit RPM when they sense overheating, low oil pressure or a sensor fault. Mercury calls it Guardian mode; other brands use different names. If power drops suddenly and the alarm sounds, this is likely. A diagnostic scan shows why.
Ignition
Worn or fouled spark plugs, a failing ignition coil or a bad connection can cause misfires that feel like a loss of power, especially under load.
The propeller
A bent blade, or a spun hub (the rubber or plastic insert slips inside the prop), makes the engine rev without pushing the boat. If RPM climbs but speed does not, check the prop.
