…and when to call a technician.
A non starting outboard is one of the most common service calls we receive. In most cases the issue traces back to a few core systems.
Common Causes of Starting Problems
Weak batteries are the number one cause. Corroded cables and poor grounds are also frequent. Fuel delivery problems such as clogged filters or contaminated fuel are common in Hawaii. Fault codes or failed sensors can prevent starting even when everything else appears normal.
What You Can Check First
Check battery voltage under load. Confirm the safety lanyard is installed and the engine is in neutral. Inspect the fuel primer bulb and look for obvious corrosion or loose connections.
When Professional Diagnostics Are Needed
Modern outboards rely on electronic control modules and sensors. Guessing can cause additional damage. A professional diagnostic scan quickly identifies the real issue and often saves money.
